It's the zigzagging

An old farmer and his dog had just returned from a carriage drive in the country. The dog seemed thoroughly exhausted as he lay down on the grass, panting for breath. “Tain’t the road that tired him,” said the farmer. “It was the zigzagging.

The team of horses has only gone about ten miles, but the dog’s run more than fifty. There wasn’t a gate open on the way but he had to go in and examine the whole premises.

There wasn’t a cat appeared but he had to chase it. There wasn’t a dog barked but he just wore himself out barking back and showing fight.

So, while we were keeping on the road, he was running over the whole countryside. No,” he concluded, “Tain’t the straight traveling—it’s the zigzagging that tires him.” This story highlights a few lessons for me.

First, it’s not necessary to do everything, but there are a few good things that are necessary. I must choose the good part (and so must you). Second, when I try to focus on too many things, the few things become fuzzy. Third, when I focus on one thing, the few things become clear. The one thing always to keep in focus? Jesus Christ. Are you focusing on the one thing these days, or are you zigzagging?

Remember the Lord’s counsel to Martha? “Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things, but only a few things are necessary, really only one, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:41-42)

I greatly appreciate you faithful prayers, service, and financial support for our church this past year. Much lies ahead of us, so let’s not get weary in well doing. Let us not grow faint from zigzagging.

The New Year has come with many activities, ministry opportunities, and worship experiences. Stay faithful. Please continue to support the work of Christ in our church through your time, talents, gifts, and service. And one other thing: Let’s keep our focus on Christ.
